The MPEG4 standard provides an advanced algorithm for the compression of images, a lowered speed for data transmission for the broadcasting of TV or radio programs, which allows for an increase in the number of programs shown in the channel strip on digital terrestrial broadcasting: from 6 TV channels in MPEG 2 format to 10 channels in the compressed MPEG 4 format. Therefore, using a GS TE-8310 MPEG4 receiver as manufactured by General Satellite for a set-top box allows broadcasting companies to more effectively use a spectrum of frequencies and to transfer more channels in the same informational stream.

The chief of General Satellite’s technical support department had the following to say: “The distinctive feature of TE-8310 model is that the receiver is constructed on the elemental base of a TV of the standard resolution. Other manufacturers’ models, supporting a MPEG-4 format of compression, are constructed on the expensive elemental base of a high definition TV. The optimization of cost in competing models is reached though an insignificant decrease made by switching off HDTV functions. MPEG-4 receiver TE-8310 is designed first of all with price in mind, though it provides the same functionality as that of its competitors”.
